I am writing to urge that in the future the UK implements an immediate ban on all imports Asian elephants from Burma basis that Burma is unable to meet the CITES criteria for captive bred elephant populations.
I would also like to take this opportunity to raise with your department, the matter of ivory currently stockpiled in Hong Kong. 1997 Hong Kong will become part of China. This country currently holds a Reservation against the Appendix 1 listing of the African elephant. If the Appendix 1 listing, and the Chinese reservation remain in place (and there is no obvious reason why this should not be the case) this ivory will then become freely available on the international market to those countries outside of CITES or with reservations against the listing. It is therefore vital that the Hong Kong stocks are destroyed or confiscated as soon as possible in order to ensure that they will not enter the international ivory market. Greenpeace is concerned to know what action Her Majesty's Government intends to take to avoid this situation.
I look forward to hearing from you as soon as possible.
Yours sincerely,
