Caution should be exercised in interpreting

the quarterly figures on building completions, as they

are subject to fairly wide fluctuations (the same

applies to the quarterly figures on building

consents). Figures covering a longer period, say

several quarters or a year, are more meaningful for

analysis.

The supply of new private residential

property, in terms of number of units completed, fell

by 5% in the first quarter of 1990 (Table 4). For the

twelve months ending March 1990, there was an increase

of 5% over a year earlier.
