Action programme to overcome specific nutritional deficiencies.
Even though considerable progress has been made in increasing food supplies, the Asia and Pacific Region still has the largest number of malnourished people in the world. Despite measures taken by several governments to improve access to food by the low-income population, malnutrition and diseases due to specific micro-nutrient deficiencies are still widespread. Such diseases are debilitating and often cause physical handicaps which give rise to the vicious circle of poverty and malnutrition.
The paper reviews the technologies available for the prevention of these diseases and the efforts presently deployed by national governments and international bodies, including FAO, to control them. It underlines the need to formulate policies and programmes which increase the coverage and improve the effectiveness of such efforts to eliminate such intolerable and preventable suffering before the turn of the century.
Discussion is also meant as a regional contribution towards the preparation of the International Conference on Nutrition proposed to be convened in 1993 in Rome.
