I attach two letters which we have received from prominent former members of the Hong Kong Government taking issue with a letter that Francis Maude wrote to Mrs Edwina Currie MP which appeared in the AECS magazine.

2. As you will see both these gentlemen take issue with the statement made (yours I recall) that Hong Kong pensioners in general do better than their UK counterparts and that there has not been any real hardship. They also take issue with the suggestion that the majority of people regard the current SPOS arrangements as satisfactory.

I would be grateful for any comments you may have on these letters and what sort of reply you feel would be appropriate. can anticipate that we will receive quite a lot of these letters now that the reply to Mrs Currie has been printed in the AECS magazine.
