The officer is subject to Colonial Regulations, Hong Kong Government Regulations and Circulars, Memoranda, Royal Hong Kong Police General Orders and Headquarter Orders, the Police Force Ordinance, and any other Ordinances or Regulations which apply to the officer. On assuming duty it is the responsibility of the officer to acquaint himself with all such regulations and instructions. These are available for inspection on request.
The duties of the officer include the usual duties of the office in which he is engaged and any other duties which the Commissioner of Police may legally call upon him to perform. Such duties will normally include the training of less qualified or less experienced staff working in the same field. All officers are required to encourage and assist such staff with a view to advancing the efficiency of the Civil Service and the Government's policy of localization. The officer may be required at any time during his appointment to attend prescribed courses of instruction.
The officer shall devote the whole of his time and attention to the service of the Government, and shall use his utmost exertions to promote the interests of the Government.
The officer shall be sworn in as a Hong Kong Police Officer at the commencement of his period of appointment in accordance with the Police Force Ordinance.
The normal hours of work for officers whose conditional hours are 44 hours gross per week are from 9.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m. from Monday to Friday with one hour for lunch and 9.00 a.m. to 1.00 p.m. on Saturdays. However, the hours of work for police officers may vary depending upon the operational needs of the Force. The officer may be required to work shifts and to wear uniform.
The officer is required to inform the Commissioner immediately of the birth, adoption, marriage and death of each dependent child, or the assumption of responsibility for any step-children; of the date when a dependent child reaches the age of 19; of the date when a dependent child in full time education or vocational training or who on account of physical and mental infirmity is dependent, reaches the age of 21; and of any change in his marital status, including marriage, divorce, or death of his spouse.
