PROFILE INTERVIEW OF LORD CAITHNESS.

1.

We have received a request from an agency called Inside Page (copy attached) for a profile interview of the Minister. The agency is

the London base for the South China Morning Post's Sunday Magazine feature called "Me". They would like the Minister for the cover of the anniversary issue scheduled for 4 November.

2.

Chris Osborne has commented from Hong Kong that "Me" is a clean living, glossy, straight forward feature which is read mainly by

expatriates. I attach some back articles. It does not have a reputation for poisonous or snide articles.

3. We have also checked, as far as is possible, the reputation of Inside Page. The verdict seems to be that they have no particular reputation

bit bland.

4. On balance we do think there would be some presentational advantage in the Minister doing this interview. The risk of a nasty piece seems small and the feature would help to introduce the Minister to a wider audience than a visit can. We therefore recommend that the Minister agree with

one caveat. The agency appear to want to focus to a large extent on the Minister's home life. Subject to the Minister's own views we would

suggest that the focus should be on "office life". This would not in any way preclude questions about the Minister's home life and outside

interests but it would give a slightly more serious note to the proceedings if this all took place in the office environment. Photographs should concentrate on the office and perhaps the House of Lords. (In addition this would be much less intrusive for the Minister on what is, after all, not a very high priority media piece)
