The 16 persons of 5 families were either friends or relatives. family contributed 2 taels of gold for the escape and they fled HO CHI MINH CITY, S.VN on 30-3-90 by ferry. Three days later, they reached HAI PHONG where they rested over-night. They proceeded to HAI NINH separately and crossed the Sino- Vietnamese border via either hill paths or boats. The whole party went to ZHU SHAN on 13-4-90 and stayed for one night. They were joined by the two ECVIIs of Group II on 14-4-90 since they were the relatives of the boatmaster. The new group of 18 set off on the same evening and sailed continuously until they touched DIAN BAI (

) on 18-4-90. They were

inspected by PRC officials but no replenishment was given. They offered RMB $800 to buy 150 litres of fuel, foodstuff and some equipment for engine
