The 16 persons of 5 families were either friends or relatives. family contributed 2 taels of gold for the escape and they fled HO CHI MINH CITY, S.VN on 30-3-90 by ferry. Three days later, they reached HAI PHONG where they rested over-night. They proceeded to HAI NINH separately and crossed the Sino- Vietnamese border via either hill paths or boats. They then gathered again at
(東興华侨旅舍) 50 as to prepare for their onward facilities. The boatmaster managed to purchase the exodus junk at ZHU SHAN (TL ) at a cost of RMB $20,000 through the arrangement of a Chinese male namede). The whole party went to ZHU SHAN on 13-4-90 and stayed for one night. They were joined by the two ECVIIs of Group II on 14-4-90 since they were the relatives of the boatmaster. The new group of 18 set off on the same evening and sailed continuously until they touched DIAN BAI (
) on 18-4-90. They were
inspected by PRC officials but no replenishment was given. They offered RMB $800 to buy 150 litres of fuel, foodstuff and some equipment for engine
