The five-person group fled HO CHI MINH CITY, S.VN on 16-2-90. days later, they reached HAI PHONG, N.VN by bus and had a 2-day stopover. On 23-2-90, they went to HAI NINH via HONG GAI by bus and immediately crossed the Sino-Vietnamese border to DONG XING (
) of China on the same day. There, they stayed at their friend's house for about a week and was told that they could purchase a sailing junk at QI SHA (E.).
). They then went to QI SHA on 1-3-90 and bought a motorized junk at a cost of RMB$6,000. They set sail in the following morning but had to stop at BEI HAI (b) after a one-day voyage due to engine problem. As their junk was found no longer sea worthy, they dedided to carry on their journey for Hong Kong by land. They first went to ZHAN JIANG (31) and then GUANG ZHOU (
). Eventually they reached SHEN ZHEN () on 4-3-90 where they were directed they way to Hong Kong by local residents. They sneaked through the border fence and managed to arrive in Hong Kong on the same night. Shortly after their arrival, they were intercepted by the Police at SHA TAU KOK (3).
