All 16 boat people were residents of southern Vietnam. They proceeded to China via the Sino-Vietnamese land border by the end of November in six different groups. They first went to HA NOI from HO CHI MINH CITY by train. After a brief stopover, they moved on to HON GAI, HA COI and finally arrived in MONG CAI. They were led by local guides to DONG XING (1. ), CHINA. Each had to paid RMB $50 and RMB $1 to the local guides and the Chinese border officials respectively.
