Incident on 3 May: Photographs

I enclose several of the photographs which we have

of the incident and which were promised in our telno 1506. I have numbered them on the back.

The first two show the tug with the lights of Castle Peak in the background. On the front can clearly be seen a man carrying a long gun. As you can see however the lighting is too dark to demonstrate conclusively that it is a uniformed Chinese officer. We have blown up and enhanced the photographs which make the outline of the figure much clearer, but the green of his uniform does not come out. However, taken together with the later photographs it is obvious that it is the same man as can be seen carrying a gun on the tug. Our experts have identified him as a corporal in the People's Armed Police. The gun he is carrying is a type S6 (7.62), the Chinese version of an AK47.

The last two photographs show the Chinese much more clearly, but by this time they had travelled into Chinese waters and the buildings in the background are in Shekou. The man standing on the barge is a PSB officer. We have photographs of him, prints of which when blown up enable clear identification.

Yours wo
