Visit by Lord Caithness to Yau Yue Wan Village on 18 September 1990
During Lord Caithness's visit
to
Yau Yue Wan village yesterday afternoon,
which went quite smoothly on the whole, he was approached by a villager (named CHUNG Chun-fuk) who handed to him a letter (copy attached).
When handing over the letter, the villager explained briefly in English that the letter was about a long unsettled dispute between the Yau Yue Wan villagers and Government over the compensation for the latter's damage to the villagers' ancestral grave. After listening to this
Lord Caithness received the letter and said he would read it. He then departed in my company. I took the opportunity to brief him quickly on the background of the issue and he let me have the letter.
2.
I note that the letter is signed by three other villagers than Mr CHUN Chun-fuk. They call themselves in the
the letter "Manager of Armchair Grave" but this is not a proper title and can be ignored. The village
is representative
among the signatories.

Since the subject dispute is purely an internal matter for
for Hong Kong Government, I suggest that Lord Caithness send a short acknowledgement to the villagers, telling them that he understands HKG is handling the matter and that HKG will give them substantive reply in due course.

Please let me know if Lord Caithness wants to have a report on the issue of the damaged grave.
