We have also achieved particular success in the transport field and
Hong Kong is one of our largest markets for double decker buses.
In my short visit here I could not help but notice the number of
British buses, Rolls Royce and Jaguar cards on the road.
Cammell
Equally important for Britain has been our success in the railway
equipment sector. GEC and Metro Cammell worked together on the
Mass Transit Railway an excellent underground railway system
which all of us would like to see emulated in the UK. Metro
with their assembly plant in Kowloon Bay, have achieved continuing
success with the supply of railcars for the MTR and the Kowloon and
Canton Railway Corporation.
Still on the transport side, we have also had some recent success
on the aerospace front. Last year Cathay Pacific announced an
order for 10 Airbus A330s, plus a further 10 options (which may
rise to 14) as replacements for Lockheed Tristars. For Cathay
this is the largest order ever placed and for Airbus Industries'
the biggest contract won in the Far East. It is also the first
time that Rolls Royce engines have been chosen for an Airbus.
British content will be more than 50%, the highest in any Airbus.
The full order (24 aircraft) is worth £1,500m, of which half will
come to British industry. Cathay's outstanding order of Boeing 747s
will also be powered by Rolls Royce engines.
