Convention and Exhibition Centre I visited yesterday. I look

forward to seeing a continuing growth in the level of this

bilateral trade though very much hope that companies like

yourselves will be able to continue to take advantage of the

current opportunities in the market place and make a major

contribution to redressing the balance of trade.

The UK has traditionally performed well in Hong Kong's project

sector, and the visits I have paid while in Hong Kong have

emphasised to me the importance and extent of that involvement.

British consultants, for instance, are in Hong Kong in large

numbers and involved in a variety of different projects.

They have

a well-deserved reputation for absolute objectivity and even

projects won by our international competitors are likely to have a

British consultant involved in the design or supervision.

For our power generating industry Hong Kong is our most important

export market worldwide. The Castle Peak Power Station is a

UK

showpiece of British engineering with its GEC turbines and Babcock

boilers and the achievements here have been instrumental in helping

British companies sell power generation equipment into China.

companies have continued to win contracts in this important sector

and China Light and Power and Hong Kong Electric expansion plans

offer exciting opportunities for British involvement in the coming

months.
