A recurrent theme, from both business and politicians,

was the need for us to be, and to be seen to be, talking to

and working with China. I said repeatedly that we were, and

would continue to; but the dismantling in June of the Madrid

Declaration, combined with my visit to Peking in July (unless

I muck it up) would emphasize this, and go down very well in

Hong Kong.

CONCLUSION

12. As usual, a hectic schedule, greatly tempered by a

delightfully relaxing Saturday evening at Fanling, and a

Sunday divided between the yacht and the foothills of Lantau.

David and Natasha looked after us splendidly; Peter Heap and

his team did sterling work; and Alan Paul and Nicola Brewer

always managed to stay ahead of the game -
