Christina cast her architect's eye over the various

possible sites. There are two good prospects, and Hong Kong

is at last talking in terms which make a prestigious building

financially achievable. Either site will need clearance with

the Chinese for Land Commission purposes, and I hope that

things will be far enough advanced for me to raise this when I

visit Peking in July.

I found business people more confident and more

optimistic than last autumn. There is some scepticism about

the feasibility of the Airport Development Scheme, and Chinese

support for it will clearly be essential. We visited Castle

Peak Power Station, which as you would expect is bigger, more

efficient, and was built more quickly than any other power

station anywhere else in the world. Extra excitement was

provided by the bolt of lightning which narrowly missed our

helicopter to find its mark on the power station chimney.

MACAO

9. I paid a brisk visit to Macao. It shows no signs of

catching up with Hong Kong. The Governor is well informed but

disinclined to be helpful on boat people. I mistakenly

believed that half of the boat people come by land to Macao
