4. Contingency plans exist to reinforce the garrison's existing 4 battalions with a further 3 battalions (2,000 troops) within 6 days should this be necessary. These contingency plans are set out

in the Joint Theatre Plan (30).

The MOD have recently given some further thought to their

contingency plans in connection with the Cabinet Office exercise to

devise plans for evacuating Hong Kong residents in a worst case

scenario, including the massing of Chinese troops in the border. Contingency plans for possible military assistance in the event of a

mass evacuation are set out in Annex C of the OD(K) paper of

25 September.
