I have been trying for some time to arrange a session of bilateral talks, either in London or Ottawa, with John
I had tried to link it Paynter, my Canadian opposite number. with a Ditchley Park conference in February, which Paynter was
but he fell ill and could not come. But when due to attend, I saw him at the Sherpa meeting at San Francisco in late March, I suggested that he might spend the day of 15 May in London for economic talks, before going on to an OECD meeting in Paris, followed by the next Sherpa meeting. Paynter reacted very favourably to this.
2. I therefore enclose a letter to John Paynter, confirming my invitation for 15 May and suggesting a rough time-table and some subjects for discussion. I am giving the original of this letter to George Haynal of the Department of External Affairs, who is calling on me on 6 April. But you may like to contact Paynter to pass on this advance version and to get his response.
3. I have found Paynter an excellent colleague and look
I told Brian Fall of these forward to seeing him in London. plans when he called on me this week and he welcomed them.
