The cases are still sub judice, pending appeal. As the Minister would have noted during his recent visit, this is
no longer a burning issue in Hong Kong. He met one of the individuals concerned (Mr Yeung Sum) during his meeting with representatives of political groups. Mr Yeung only made the slightest passing reference to the affair and certainly did
not use the opportunity to complain about his treatment.

The reality is that if there is any question of
political motivation behind the cases, that motivation is to
be found on the part of those prosecuted, rather than the Hong Kong authorities. I have always felt that it was the "victims" who had most to gain from the publicity which the
prosecutions have generated. I rather hope that the Hong
Kong authorities have drawn the same conclusion.
