PROGRAMME DEVELOPMENT PROPOSALS

4.1.

Whereas television is in a position to influence

and indeed establish a trend in Programming in Hong Kong,

as almost all programmes are produced locally by the tele-

vision licensees themselves, Radio is not in such a position.

The mainstay of Radio is music. It is simply not

possible to create recordings in such quantities as to be able

to sustain our own programming. Therefore, the ability to

establish a trend, or even to influence its direction, is not

within the ability and scope of a radio enterprise.

On the contrary, programme plans have been to a

certain extent influenced by listeners' surveys, for within

a commercial environment, we have to take note of the likes

and dislikes of our listeners and adjust correspondingly to

their tastes in order to survive.

4.2.

To project listening habits for the six years

(1989-1995) is unrealistic. We furnish but two examples :-

4.2.1.

¿

Externally, we may see a more prominent role of

musical works being created in China, particularly in the

Guangzhou region and to a lesser extent from Taiwan.

Putonghua

is being more and more widely used and studied by the people

of Hong Kong, and it is not an impossibility that within this

six-year period there will be more programming originating in this language from these sources.
