CBI OVERSEAS SCHOLARSHIPS
1. The CBI Scholarships Board, on which the FCO is represented by COMED, will meet in July to consider which countries should be invited to propose candidates for participation in the CBI Scholarships Scheme in 1989/90. Scholarships offered under this scheme are intended to provide "on-the-job" experience for engineering graduates from overseas, by placing them with British companies for a period of training from between four and eighteen months. The scheme is funded by the BOTB and by British industry on an approximately equal basis.
2. I attach a copy of the CBI's proposed list of offers for 1990/91, based on actual response and results over recent years, with the list of offers for 1989/90 and the lists of offers for and awards made in 1988/89 for comparison. The 1990/91 list is by no means exclusive and suitable candidates can be considered from other countries, especially if there are strong reasons, preferable commercial, for doing so.
3. CBI have asked for FCO comments on their proposed list of recipient countries and of the number of scholarships which they propose to offer in each case. They would like our views by the end of June in advance of the Board's meeting. I should be grateful for your comments by 16 June please.
