Netherlands Applications halved in 1988 from 13,000 to 7,000, but there were 1,000 in January 1989.
France About 35,000 applications in 1988; perhaps 40,000 expected in 1989.
Germany Had 103,000 applications in 1988; about half the total in Western Europe. Given that nearly 250,000 ethnic Germans also arrived from Eastern Europe, "the situation is becoming explosive". Policy makers see the need for change but there is no impetus in Parliament.
Denmark Received 230 Romanians from Hungary last year. A visa requirement was introduced on 1 January since when there have been no new arrivals.
Canada Unofficially the backlog "may be 50% higher" than the published figure of 85,000. Arrivals are down 50% in
January but the new Board is not processing cases within the planned timetable. This was attributed to inexperience and to legal manoeuvering by applicants: the adjournment rate is high. Most new cases are being judged to have a "credible basis" under the new system; the I think optimistic conclusion drawn was that manifestly unfounded applicants may be being deterred.

Austria Applications rose from 11,400 to 15,700 in 1988 but they think their accelerated procedures introduced last May prevented a much bigger rise.
