to give Mr Zuercher lunch and talk over the Mendis

RECENT DEVELOPMENTS

Opening a tour de table I mentioned recent trends, Mendis and Thirukumar. There were a number of interesting points:

Switzerland Turks now represent more than half their new asylum applications. There has been a recent upsurge of arrivals of young Tamils. They have recently announced a

quota of refugees to be taken from countries of first

asylum: 1,000 over 2 years.

Sweden About 80% of asylum-seekers are eventually allowed to stay in one category or another (25% Convention refugees, 38% quasi refugees, 18% "war resisters"). They are allowing all pre-1988 arrivals to stay unless they are criminals or security risks.

Norway Applications overall fell by 23% in 1988 to 6,600, attributed to stricter criteria and a visa requirement for Chile. Applications from Ethiopians and Somalis (over 500)

rose.
