hong kong signs air services agreement with brunei
hong kong, january 9 (xinhua)
--
an air service agreement between the governments of hong kong and brunei was signed here today.
the agreement made it possible for the airlines of each side to increase the level of their current twice weekly services in the future to meet demands, said anson chan, secretary for economic services, who signed the agreement on behalf of the hong kong government.
she said that the hong kong-brunei air service agreement "is the fourth such agreement designed specifically with the provisions of the sino-british joint declaration in mind and are capable of remaining in force after 1997."
the air service between hong kong and brunei began in 1960 with the cathay pacific airways of hong kong operating a weekly ic 4 service, the royal brunei airlines, formed in 1974, began operations on the route in 1975.
in the early 1980s, brunei used to play as the mid-point on cathay pacific airways' weekly services to western australia.
by december 1985, cathay pacific and royal brunei airlines had reached agreement to provide twice weekly services which they now operate jointly using boeing 757 aircraft between hong kong and brunei.
