Unilateral ban unlikely to have any significant effect on total trade. That is why it is important for international community to.

act together under CITES.

At CITES Meeting, we intend to press for immediate action to preserve and protect the African elephant rather than waiting the standard 90 days provided under CITES regulations for new

resolutions to take effect.

WHAT IS HMG DOING TO STOP ILLEGAL IMPORTS FROM UNITED ARAB EMIRATES?

We have repeatedly urged Government of United Arab Emirates to tighten controls on ivory trade in the Emirates. Have also helped international organisations and interest groups to make their

concerns known to UAE authorities.

-

There have been no licenced imports of ivory (either raw or

worked) from United Arab Emirates since the introduction in August 1988 of legislation to cover import of worked ivory into Hong Kong.
