Dear Lord Glenarthur,

We have had a number of telephone calls and letters protesting against the ivory trade in Hong Kong on the grounds that it encourages the indiscrimate killing of elephants and rhinoceroses, as a result of which these animals are becoming an endangered species.

I would be most grateful if you could give me a brief indication of anything useful that we might say in response

to these.

There was in fact a short item on this question in the Today Programme on Radio 4 this morning.
