REPATRIATION OF SCREENED OUT VIETNAMESE BOAT PEOPLE: PRESENTATION

Mr Maude held a meeting yesterday afternoon to consider how to present the decision on involuntary repatriation and the first return of screened out VBP. The following measures were agreed:
Parliament
Whips Office brief key facts and figures, to be circulated by CCO to MPs not familiar with the problem early next week.
Draw up list of MPs who supported the recent critical EDM on VBP; and other MPs known to be critical of on this issue

Secretary of State to see senior dissident MPs Julian Amery, Philip Goodhart, Jim Lester etc early next week, perhaps over a drink following his attendance at the backbench Foreign Affairs Committee on Tuesday
Draw up list of MPs likely to be prepared to support the Government, ask supportive Questions and to give helpful interviews;
