70% of the respondents replied that there were problems in Hong Kong that needed to be solved. This is higher than the figure recorded in May/June 1989 (63%)

The three most mentioned problems by the respondents were "refugees", "Hong Kong Future" and "transport". The percentage of people mentioning "refugee-related problems" increased from 59% in May/June 1989 to 73% in this

survey. The percentage who mentioned "Hong Kong Future" remained about the same as in May/June 1989 (56% in August 1989 cf. 54% in May/June 1989)

49% of the people who mentioned "refugee-related problems said that "Vietnamese refugees are a burden to Hong Kong", 20% talked about the "unsatisfactory refugee policies" and 63 mentioned "objection to the setting up of a de tention centre in Sai Kung"

Among those who mentioned "Hong Kong Future" as a problem, 43% talked about "lack of confidence", 21% mentioned "brain drain" and 6% showed concern that "democracy is not yet achieved" in Hong Kong
