The TUC General Secretary, Mr Norman Willis, spoke at a fringe meeting in support of the Trade Unionists China Campaign (TUCC), an organisation backed by NALGO and set up in response to the Tiananmen incident. The TUCC called for genuine democracy in China and right of abode in the UK for Hong Kong residents. Several Hong Kong "trade unionists" were present to press for TUC support in calling for more democracy in Hong Kong, but their affiliation to Hong Kong trades unions was not clear.

Whilst the Congress called for the repeal of the Prevention of Terrorism Act, it did not involve itself in any Northern Irish issue. The American fraternal delegate from the AFL/CIO caused embarrassment to the US Ambassador present by stringent personal criticisms of former President Reagan and the Prime Minister, which Mr Willis told me were unexpected and that he deplored.
