1. We have been largely at one with the US Administration in our reaction to the suppression of the protest movement in China earlier this year.

The initial package of measures we announced (suspension of Ministerial and other high level visits, suspension of high level military cooperation and a ban on arms sales) was closely in line

with the measures taken by the US Administration. We also took similar action in assisting Chinese students studying overseas to extend their stay. These common measures, together with the

postponement of new World Banks loans, formed the basis of the Paris

Economic Summit Declaration although we and our European partners
