48. UK's view on Chinese accusation that Hong Kong is being used as

base for subversion against China?

Believe that Hong Kong people must and do exercise of their

freedoms.

49. Hong Kong Government has been criticised by Chinese for tolerating donations of mney to pre-democracy movement and helping

rebel students leave China

In a free society people have right to organise themselves for political purposes provided they remain within the law.

50. Stand on asylum seekers from China?

All applications for asylum are treated on their merits, wherever

they come from, in accordance with our obligation under the 1951 UN

Convention on Refugees.

51. Criticism of British Embassy in Peking for its treatment of Hong Kong journalists and residents in time of crisis

Ambassador in Peking and his staff worked round the clock to

ensure safety of British citizens and Hong Kong residents.

Hong Kong people stranded in Peking or Shanghai received exactly

same help and advice from Embassy and Consulate-General as other

British nationals.

No question of discrimination against Hong Kong people.
