Hong Kong became a British colony in 1841. In the past 148
years, the people of Hong Kong have fought and died for Britain
in two world wars. Through the colonial relationship, they have
contributed enormously for generations to Britain's economic
prosperity.
The only purpose of this mass rally and the march past
Government House is to demand that the British Government behave
honourably towards the people of Hong Kong, most of whom are
British subjects by birth.
Turning over almost six million people in Hong Kong to
another government without the consent of the people is not
consistent with democratic principles or with British honour.
Turning over almost six million people against their will to
a Communist Government that perpetrated the massacre in Beijing
last month is despicable as well as dishonourable.
The British Government must immediately take all necessary
steps to secure the safety of all the inhabitants of this British
territory.
The British Government must restore full citizenship rights
to all British subjects in Hong Kong, which is their birthright.
The British Government must honour its moral obligation to
all permanent residents of Hong Kong and safeguard their future
well-being by providing them with a right of abode in a
