VISIT BY OMELCO DELEGATION, 20-24 NOVEMBER
The Governor of Hong Kong has informed us that a delegation from
OMELCO, (the Office of Members of the Executive and Legislative
Councils of Hong Kong) will be visiting London from 20-24 November (to coincide with the Foreign Affairs debate). The main purpose of
the visit will be to lobby on the Hong Kong nationality issue.
The delegation will be led by Mr Allen Lee Peng-Fei CBE, the Senior
Member of the Legislative Council. The other members of the
delegation are prominent members of the Legislative Council: Mr John
Swaine, Mr Martin Barrow, Mr Hui Yin-Fat, Mr Ronald Arculli, Mr
Jimmy McGregor, Mr Andrew Wong and Mr Daniel Tse. The Foreign Secretary and Mr Maude have agreed to see the delegation.
have particularly requested a call on the Home Secretary.
But they
The Foreign Secretary hopes that Mr Waddington can find time to see the delegation. I understand that a call has been pencilled in on
22 November. OMELCO evidently attach importance to meeting the new
Home Secretary. The nationality issue is of course a particularly pressing one in Hong Kong and it would be helpful if the Home Secretary could indicate a readiness to listen to OMELCO's views on
the subject. This would be much appreciated by OMELCO and would
create a favourable impression in Hong Kong. The delegation will be seeking to lobby on the nationality issue.
