Recently, many foreign friends have been concerned about the situation in China and Shanghai, for which we'd like to express our sincere thanks.

In the period of January May, Shanghai saw 2

good tendency in its

and industrial

agricultural

production as well as in its economic relations technical cooperation with foreign countries. Compared

with the corresponding period of last year, the gross

value of industrial output rose by 9.7 percent and

exports in foreign trade by 2.4 percent; 121 projects

of direct foreign investment were approved in Shanghai

absorbing an agreed foreign capital of 240 million

US dollars, an increase of 2.8 times and 66.38

percent respectively; and the total industrial output

value of Shanghai's joint venture enterprises,

cooperative enterprises and wholly foreign-owned

enterprises already in operation registered a

growth of 62 percent.

In early June, a counter-revolutionary rebellion

broke out in Beijing, the capital of our country.

From June 5 to 8, a small number of people in Shanghai

also set road barricades in the urban districts,

intercepted vehicles, punctured vehicle tyres and

burned train cars with the result that urban traffic

was put in paralysis, tens of thousands of employees

and workers could not go to work and return home usual, production dropped and economic losses reached about 300 million yuan; daily necessaries could not be
