The civilian population in 1987 was 29,692 of whom 20,162 were Gibraltarians, 5,665 other British Subjects and 3,865 aliens.

Gibraltar has approximately a total of 11,900 employed persons. The main areas of employment are in the government service, retail and wholesale trades, tourism, construction and ship repairing.

In 1985 the total value of imports, including fuels, amounted to £113.2 million while exports were an estimated £48 million. Foodstuffs accounted for about 15% of imports. Exports mainly consist of re-exports of petroleum and petroleum products supplied to shipping and there is also a small but flourishing entrepôt trade.

A commercial dockyard was set up to replace the Royal Naval Dockyard which closed at the end of 1984.
