Is

(b) pp180, 241. "Sovereignty is claimed by Argentina". there an implication that it is not also claimed and indeed possessed by HMG?

(c) p181. The population figure given is now out of date.

(d) pl81. The paragraph on the economy is out of date in that fishing has now become a key element.

(e) p181. The paragraph on land use makes no mention of the fact that many sub-divisions have already taken place.

(f) pl86, para 1. "No official agency responsible for conservation". The Falkland Islands Government is responsible for the management of the FICZ. Its Fisheries Department monitors catches in the zone on a daily basis and data is analysed locally and by FIG's scientific advisers at Imperial College.

7. As far as the recommendations to the UK Government for the Falkland Islands are concerned (p188) we have the following comments:

1 (a) is already being done.

(b) is a matter for FIG to consider

(c) who would pay for such a study? We are not convinced it would necessarily be useful, but we have no strong feelings against such a study if a source of money can be found.

8. We do not have any specific comments on the recommendations about the British Antarctic Territories on p141, to which the reader is referred after the South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands sections. These are more for SAmD than ourselves. As for the general recommendations on p89, No 4 is addressed to NGO's, Nos 1 and 3 are general in nature, while No 2 suggests a liaison group be formed. It is doubtful whether this last recommendation would amount to more than another layer of bureaucracy, but you will wish to consider the desirability of such a group in the light of the views of other Departments and DTS.
