The Governor and his wife live in the paradox of isolation in that one cannot make close friends, and of exposure in that whe rever you go, you are known and your actions and words watched, weighed and gossipped about. My conclusion on this is that one must accept the exposure and behaves "normally", and uses the high profile as appropriate. Involvement in the charitable and voluntary organisations, in particular in their fund raising activites, (bikathons and the like) is useful for contacts and appreciated.
The Governor's wife finds herself much involved in such activities, plus a considerable weight in the running of Government House. The Governor must watch carefully the burden
burden on his wife. Entertainment, which Caymanians expect to be done regularly and in some style, is quite heavy.
One must be careful not to accept too many engagements, particularly just before and during Legislative Assembly meetings. It is difficult to recover from getting overtired. Until you have experienced it, it is hard
understand the psychological/ emotional demands on you both, and its effect on your health and private life. Keep a pet! (or two).

To sum up: there are many burdens and aspects the exposure, the political manipulations; the responsibility for grave issues such as capital punishment, drugs, and the need to urge politicians forwards in social programmes. But there are many benefits, for it is a pleasant territory, and its people, although occasionally obstinate beyond belief, are decent, Christian based, and ready to consider the less fortunate among them. There is greed, because there is real money as a result of economic development. Colour is not a serious issue, although one has the feeling that, particularly with a large Jamaican workforce here, it may raise
