In the published trade statistics, re-exports to China accounted for about

35% of all re-exports in the third quarter of 1988. This proportion changed to

25% after discounting for trade of outward processing nature.

Making the same adjustment to domestic exports, the proportion of domestic

exports in the third quarter of 1988 attributable to China decreased from 18% to

5%, and China moved from being Hong Kong's second largest market (after the USA)

to being the fifth largest market (after the USA, Federal Republic of Germany, the

United Kingdodm and Japan).

Regarding analysis by commodity, the survey shows that in the third quarter

of 1988, for both domestic exports and re-exports to China, the top commodity groups
