FOREIGN AFFAIRS COMMITTEE REPORT ON HONG KONG

Mr Maude was grateful for your submission of 15 August. He is content with the draft letter from Mr Holt to the Clerk of the Committee, except for the last paragraph. Given that we may not want to make any annoucement on the nationality package until after the Prince of Wale's visit to Hong Kong, he does not believe we should commit ourselves to a formal reply to the FAC report before Parliament reconvenes. He has amended the draft accordingly.

Mr Maude recognises that if we do decide to delay a reply to the FAC beyond the beginning of October, we shall need to square Mr David Howell MP in the meantime.
