5. Like Canada, Australia also sets an annual target figure for immigration. This is currently 140,000 for 1989/90. There are no quotas for individual countries within the annual intake. The overall annual figure is subdivided as follows:

Entry to Australia under either the extended family or economic migration programmes (with the exception of the business migration programme) is determined by a points system. health and character checks.
