5. Like Canada, Australia also sets an annual target figure for immigration. This is currently 140,000 for 1989/90. There are no quotas for individual countries within the annual intake. The overall annual figure is subdivided as follows:

(Immediate family 41,000, extended family 30,000);

(b) Economic migration 54,000

(Business migration 10,000, employer nomination

Entry to Australia under either the extended family or economic migration programmes (with the exception of the business migration programme) is determined by a points system. The highest scorers in each category are accepted. Under the Business Migration Programme, businessmen need an inital investment of half a million Australian

dollars, a proven track record and sufficient funds to cover settlement costs. Entry of immediate family is subject only to

health and character checks.
