(B) CONSULATE-GENERAL IN HONG KONG
POINTS TO MAKE
Already planning for a suitable Consulate- General in Hong Kong
after 1997, as demonstration of our continuing commitment to Hong
Kong. Will be a very sizeable mission and amongst our largest
posts.
- Problem of finding a suitable site for future Consulate-General is
a matter we
we are actively pursuing. Not easy because the sums of
money involved are very large. Fully seized of importance of
ensuring that we are properly represented in 1997 and of having the
right sort of building for its functions.
Need to decide whether we should aim for a "Britannia House"
including British Council and Immigration/Consular Sections in one
location, or whether it would be more efficient to disperse the
offices. Need also to consider our strategy in context of a booming
property market, and relative costs involved in buying or leasing.
SUPPLEMENTARIES
What sites do you have in mind?
- A number of sites are being considered. No decisions taken.
(If pressed):
What about HMS Tamar?
-
The Prince of Wales building in HMS Tamar, British Forces HQ in
Hong Kong, is one possibility among several, but it does not belong
to HMG.
