Political parties in Hong Kong
ATTITUDE OF PEOPLE IN HONG KONG
Political parties in Western sense do not exist in Hong Kong. Many people there prefer "consensus" approach and do not favour concept of political parties which would entail emergence of confrontational politics. Some fear that party political system
would be objectionable to Chinese, who might feel obliged to respond
by encouraging Chinese Communist party to play active role.
RECENT DEVELOPMENTS
Existing political groupings in Hong Kong eg Martin Lee's "Pro-democracy camp" and alliance of business interests are pressure groups aimed at influencing government policy rather than political "parties" with formal membership lists and party platforms/election
candidates.
Newly formed "New Hong Kong Alliance" is slightly more formal in
sense of having group of founder members but does not appear to
amount to a "party". Too early to say where such developments might
lead.
Development of more formal political groupings is to be expected as political system, including system of representative government,
matures in Hong Kong.
