FOREIGN AFFAIRS COMMITTEE

HKB 011/3

RECEIVE

2 1FERISCO

15 February 1989

Dear Sylvia,

Inquiry into Hong Kong

Following our earlier telephone conversations, I am writing to confirm that the Foreign Affairs Committee is requesting a memorandum from the Foreign and Commonwealth office in connection with the above inquiry. This memorandum, which should be related to the terms of reference of the inquiry as in the enclosed Press Release, should be suitable for publication. It may be supplemented by other papers, which may or may not be classified. The Committee would much appreciate receiving the memorandum by Wednesday 1 March.

The Committee also wishes to take formal evidence from the FCO on this inquiry on 22 March at 10.30 am. I understand that the Secretary of State has offered to attend, and the Committee would welcome his presence.

I can also confirm that the Committee would like an informal and off-the-record briefing at the Foreign Office on the morning of 8 March.
