Committee were to take formal evidence in public, this might make an already high profile visit even higher profile. The Governor's position would be particularly awkward if he was required to give
formal public evidence in his own territory.
6. The Clerk said that the Committee
would probably welcome
guidance on who might be included among the witnesses in Hong Kong. We agreed to provide a list of the main Hong Kong groups, with some assessment of their standing, if the Committee would find it
helpful.
7.
A further point which the Committee would need to decide in due course ws whether or not to appoint a specialist adviser. We might be consulted about this, depending on what they decided to do.
8.
The Committee have not yet agreed on a date for their visit to Hong Kong although the visit will probably be in April and will last about a week, followed by three days in Peking. The Committee will clearly require a great deal of help over the logistics of their visit to Hong Kong. We are pursuing detailed logistical arrangements and possible dates with Hong Kong and Peking.
