To

Amend the Interpretation and General Clauses Ordinance.

Enacted by the Governor of Hong Kong, with the advice and consent

of the Legislative Council thereof.

1. This Ordinance may be cited as the Interpretation and General Short title Clauses (Amendment) Ordinance 1988.

Section 18 of the Interpretation and General Clauses Ordinance is Marginal

amended--

(a) in subsection (1) by repealing "to the marginal note of" and

substituting "as a note to"; and

(b) in subsection (3) by adding "or section heading" after "marginal

note".

Explanatory Memorandum

Section 18(1) of the Ordinance permits the addition of a reference to imperial enactments to marginal notes and section 18(3) states that marginal notes do not have any legislative effect.

2. Subsection (1) is amended so that references to Imperial enact- ments can be placed as a footnote to the section.

3. Subsection (3) is expanded to include "section headings". The present practice of placing notes in the margin will be discontinued in favour of similar notes as "section headings".
