Most developed countries are showing increasing concern for their environment. Over the past few years, Hong Kong

Kong has resolved to improve its environment and quality of life. The Environmental Pollution Advisory Committee has encouraged the expansion of environmental education from primary to post-graduate levels. The EPD is also producing an environmental education package for use in secondary schools.

Environmental publicity focusses upon World Environment Day (WED) on 5 June. This year's celebrations were opened by the Governor and included environmental song and photographic contests as well as many district functions.

All events were funded by private sponsorship. Arrangements are now being made for World Environment Day 1989.

Amendments to Pollution Control Legislation

A particular problem we have had in implementing pollution control measures has been difficulty in making effective legislation. When the WDO, WPCO and APCO were passed into law, the need to protect the environment through pollution control was not
