REFUGEES AND BRC'S POLICY DOCUMENT "SETTLING FOR A FUTURE": MEETING WITH MR RENTON
Mrs Fair wrote on 7 March to send copy of the Government's response to "Settling for a Future" and to notify you of a commitment to a follow up meeting between Tim Renton and Lord Chitnis, Chairman of the British Refugee Council. I am sorry that we inadvertently addressed this to the wrong person but hope it has now found its way to your desk.
The meeting has now been arranged by Mr Renton's Private Office for 10.30am on Wednesday 27 April. We expect the meeting to lası between 1-1 hours and understand the BRC delegation will include Lord Chitnis, Chairman BRC; Martin Barber Director BRC; Alan Phillips Deputy Director BRC; Kate Allen, Settlement Services Director; David Bull, General Secretary, World University Service; and Jack Shieh, Director, Refugee Action.
We have tried to obtain details of the issues the BRC delegation are likely to raise and so far they have specified the following:-
a) the new Social Security regulations
b) the new Adult Training Scheme
c) the present position on the 2 new Fora
d) a plea for a Ministerial meeting at DES to cover of education issues
e) grant aid for refugees From Vietnam in 1989-90.
wide range
No doubt further items will be added and priorities changed t the meeting approaches.
I should be glad to know by phone whether FCO wish to be represented at the meeting and to receive a very short contribution to the briefing for Mr Renton covering FCO matters which may be raised and guidance on their handling. As you can see it is BRC's current intention to concentrate on domestic UK issues and I will let you know if there are any new developments.
