PETITION

TO PRIME MINISTER MARGARET THATCHER

AND THE BRITISH CABINET

WHEREAS more than a million Boat People" have risked their lives to escape from their own country in search for freedom since the fall of the Republic of Vietnam in April 1975;

WHEREAS the United Kingdom is one of the great countries of the Free World that have generouly accepted to take in a good number of these freedom-seekers and helped them to resettle;

WHEREAS more than fifty. thousand Vietnamese refugees are still waiting in Hongkong and other Southeast Asian refugee camps for a chance to start a new life again ;

WHEREAS more Boat People are still escaping from Vietnam due to continuing persecution, discrimination and violation of human rights there or due to the improper implementation of the Orderly Departure Program;

THEREFORE we members of the Greater Toronto Vietnamese Refugees Assistance Committee, representing the community of Vietnamese-speaking people in Chtario/Canada -- do petition the British Government to:

1. KEEP ON allowing the Boat People to seek temporary asylum in Hongkong;

2. KEEP ON admitting refugees from Vietnam to come and resettle in the

United Kingdan;

3. INCREASE the number of Vietnamese refugees permitted to resettle in

the United Kingdom;

4. PRESSURE the authorities in Vietnam to stop all persecutions,

discriminations and violations of human rights, and to correctly implement the dispositions of the Orderly Departure Program in order to reduce to nil the number of refugees who have to risk their lives in searching for freedom.
