MR MICHAEL THOMAS AND MISS LYDIA DUNN
1.
Sir D Wilson has told me in strict confidence that Mr Michael Thomas,
who is just completing his tour of duty as Attorney-General, and
Miss Lydia Dunn are planning to get married at Easter.
The ceremony is likely to take place on 2 April. The Governor is exercising his powers under local ordinances to allow the ceremony to take place at his lodge at
Fanling, so as to ensure privacy.
2. There has been much press speculation in Hong Kong about the relationship between Mr Thomas and Miss Dunn, and the news of the wedding will create a
local sensation. For that reason the Governor has asked me to keep the news
to the smallest possible number of people. He has however suggested that the Secretary of State and Lord Glenarthur may wish to send messages of
congratulation: I shall submit drafts nearer the time of the ceremony.
3. By the time the wedding takes place Mr Thomas will have ceased to be
Attorney-General. He has already let it be known that he will stay on in
Hong Kong and practise privately, an announcement which has caused some
local controversy. Miss Dunn's plans are unaffected. The Governor has told
me that he will almost certainly make her Senior Member of ExCo in the
autumn, when Sir S Y Chung is due to retire.
