Saturday, March 19 State Councillor Gu Mu, when inspecting the Daya Bay nuclear plant yesterday, stressed that management should be stepped up to ensure the quality and schedule of the nuclear project, some papers reported, quoting a China News Service dispatch from Shenzhen.

Tuesday, March 22 - The Royal Observatory hoped to have devised a plan by the end of the year for an emergency radiation monitoring programme for the Daya Bay nuclear power plant, most papers reported, quoting Director of Royal Observatory Patrick Sham.

Speaking at a press conference yesterday, Mr Shan said that his department's existing facilities and equipment were insufficient to cope with any contingency plans that required further measuring of the radiation level from the plant, which would come into operation in 1992.

He said that in formulating an advance warning system for any nuclear accident, two to three additional monitoring stations might be set up in the northeastern part of the New Territories.
